Mile-by-Mile Route & Elevation Highlights

JP Doyle’s is one of the official race sponsors this year.

  • Miles 1–2 (The Start & Historic Landmarks): Runners line up on Beekman Avenue heading east toward Broadway/Route 9. Shortly after Mile 1, you’ll pass the historic Old Dutch Church and the iconic Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Coach Tip: Resist the urge to surge early—keep your effort controlled despite the high energy and festive costumes.

  • Miles 3–4 (Peabody Field & The Hudson): The course winds up Bellwood Avenue and past Peabody Field before delivering rewarding views along the Hudson River on Riverside Drive. Use the river stretches to settle into a rhythm and breathe.

  • Miles 5–6.2 (The Hill Climbs & Finish Stretch): The final miles challenge your legs with rolling ascents as you loop back toward Pocantico Street near Beekman Avenue. Save some energy in your tank for the final climb to the finish arch!

You can check out the official course map for a detailed look at the route.

Key Race Logistics & Course Details

  • USATF-Certified & Timed: The course is officially USATF-certified with full electronic chip timing. It is also an RRCA Championship Event Series race featuring overall and age-group awards.

  • Course Time Limit: 1.5 hours (the race runs from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM).

  • On-Course Hydration: Features three fully stocked water stations along the route, enthusiastically managed by local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts for a true community atmosphere.

  • Preparation Essential: Because of the rolling elevation, incorporating targeted hill workouts for runners into your weekly build is essential to strengthen your quads and glutes for race day.

What to Wear & Race Day Prep

Because the Sleepy Hollow 10K takes place in late October in Westchester, race morning weather is usually crisp and cool, but it can be warm so check the weather forecast. Dressing in light, moisture-wicking layers is key so you stay warm during the pre-race announcements without overheating once you tackle the rolling hills. Aim for a breathable long-sleeve top or jacket for pre-race. Make sure to wear well-tested road running shoes with reliable traction, as you’ll be navigating asphalt streets, fallen autumn leaves, and elevation shifts.

One of the biggest highlights of this event is the sheer creativity of the Halloween costumes, with a huge portion of runners dressed as spooky characters, goblins, and pop culture icons. If you’re planning to join in on the fun, test your outfit during a practice run beforehand to make sure it won't cause chafing, restrict your peripheral vision, or catch underfoot on the climbs.

Sleepy Hollow is a short train ride from NYC on the Metro-North.

How to Get to Sleepy Hollow from NYC

Sleepy Hollow is easily accessible from New York City by car or via Metro-North Railroad. Taking Metro-North is seamless—you can buy your tickets directly on the MTA TrainTime app. Just remember to activate your mobile ticket right as you step onto the train. If you wait until a few stops in, you risk getting fined or receiving a warning email from the MTA (like I did!).

Trains run regularly from Grand Central Terminal to the Tarrytown station. Local trains take about 55 minutes, while express options get you there in just 38 minutes. Check the MTA TrainTime schedule ahead of time and plan to arrive with plenty of cushion so you can pick up your bib, hit the restrooms, and soak in the pre-race atmosphere. From the Tarrytown Metro-North station, it’s a quick 14-minute walk (or a light 7-minute jog) to the start line on Beekman Avenue - the perfect shakeout warm-up before the race!

⛰️ Coach’s Guide: How to Train for a Hilly 10K

To crush a hilly course like Sleepy Hollow, your training needs to focus on building leg strength, improving downhill control, and practicing effort-based pacing rather than stressing over exact mile splits:

  • Master Effort-Based Pacing (Zone 3/4): When running up continuous inclines, focus on maintaining a steady effort level rather than keeping a fixed pace. Shorten your stride slightly and pump your arms on the climbs to conserve energy, then use gravity to recover on the descents without over-striding.
  • Build Quad & Glute Power: Hills demand serious muscular endurance. Incorporating targeted compound movements into your weekly routine prepares your lower body to handle elevation changes and protects your knees on steep downhills. Check out our coach-approved strength training exercises for runners to build key leg and core strength before race day.
  • Add Progression Long Runs: In the weeks leading up to the race, structure your weekly long runs on rolling terrain. Practice accelerating slightly over the final 2 miles to simulate the tough, upward climb to the finish line on Pocantico Street.
Sleepy Hollow 10K FAQs

Is the Sleepy Hollow 10K hilly?

Yes, the Sleepy Hollow 10K features continuous rolling hills along asphalt roads, including a noticeable final ascent back toward the finish line on Pocantico Street. While challenging, the scenic Hudson River views and historic cemetery landmarks make every climb well worth the effort.

Can you wear costumes for the Sleepy Hollow 10K?

Absolutely! Festive Halloween costumes are heavily encouraged, and a majority of the field runs dressed up in costume. Just be sure to test your outfit on a practice run ahead of time to ensure it won't restrict your stride or cause chafing on the hills.

What is the best way to pace a hilly 10K?

Focus on effort-based pacing rather than keeping a fixed watch split. Maintain a steady, controlled effort (Zone 3/4) by shortening your stride on the inclines, and use the downhill sections to relax, regain momentum, and recover without over-striding.
