So many guys would comment on my "big" legs that I used to shudder at the thought of wearing anything that drew attention to my muscular legs.

I learned early on that my mind could be my greatest asset or worst enemy, depending on how I felt on any given day.

For combatting anxiety, there is no simple magic remedy but the great news is running helps a lot!

I’ve dealt with anxiety my whole life, and through the process, found that running and art help ease my mind.

My friend Derek joined me, and we both embarked on a journey that was more than a race but also about new beginnings, second chances and long delayed relaxation.

Each cheer washing over that inner echo "You're nothing." Each step getting me farther from that voice and closer to the truth. I was doing it, and the whole city of New York was behind me.

I found out about the Riviera Nayarit Half Marathon from the race director, Arturo Garcia, and it felt like perfect timing. I was finally able to run again and train for something and also did not have plans for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

I was living in NYC and traveling the world, seeing street art all over the place. I was always inspired by street art, with its unexpected presence and transformation of public space. I also love the inner dialogue that happens between me and the art when I pass by. It's both so personal and public. One day, I couldn't stand how I couldn't feel inspired, so I picked a print of one of my shoe sketches and created wheatpastes and hit the city.

There are many obstacles that prevent poor people and people with mental illness from accessing exercise opportunities. For example, the cost of transportation, the cost of gyms, lack of exercise education and health information, hazardous environments...Then there are the obstacles like uncertainty, intimidation, resistance to change, inconvenience, discomfort and low self-esteem that we all tend to face regardless of mental health or income.

David is an energetic New Jersey runner who heads up race events and running movements, as well as inspires thousands with his super cool IG shots at @run.dmg. I was lucky he slowed down for a few minutes for this interview.

"Being a part of Back on My Feet has given me things and shown me things that transcend running. It has provided me with a new appreciation for battling adversity and introduced me to some wonderful people. Aside from that, I think New York is the greatest running city in the world."

My goal I guess is that people get attracted to the work, stop, and get taken away in the moment…away from their smartphone and live in the present.

I've had the opportunity to run 12 miles with someone who has overcome greater odds than I can imagine, but at one point didn't think he could run a mile. A teammate that struggled through a 10-mile race a year ago, carried me through a 16 mile run last week. My sister is running her very first half marathon in January and I get to run beside her. They motivate me.

Running has impacted my life by giving me an almost limitless source of energy.

"I run by feel because I'm a thinker and if I allow it to consume me too much, it won't be as fun. Running just helps with life."

While all of us girls were inundated with messages on how we should look, talk, think, date and act by the time we reached high school, some of us were too busy running, sweating, shooting, jumping, throwing, lifting and kicking to listen.
