Haunted Brooklyn 5K Run and Walk: Spirit Animals

Join Runstreet and Bklyn Treks on a spook-tacular Haunted Brooklyn 5K Run and Walk in celebration of Halloween and local history! There will be a run and walk option for this fun 5K tour of North Brooklyn’s most haunted spots. Melissa Corrigan, founder of Bklyn Treks, will lead the 5K walking tour and Marnie Kunz, the founder of Runstreet, will lead the 5K fun run. Costumes are encouraged, and the theme is Spirit Animals!

The 5K routes will be guided. For runners, the pace will be 10-minute mile pace, and the walk will be at a pace of 20 minutes per mile. Both tours will make stops to tell tales of hauntings along the route, and we will also check out some street art and the creative Halloween decor in Historic Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. 

Dress as your spirit animal and come out for a fun Brooklyn Halloween event!

Highlights:

  • Visit 6 haunted locations and hear the stories of the spooky history of each place.

  • Meet other fantastic folks who love Halloween, history, outdoor exercise, and art!

  • See the lovely historic Carroll Gardens neighborhood and the homes decked out in festive Halloween decor.

  • Stop for photos and learn about the artists at the Wall of Justice in Gowanus

  • Finish in Historic Carroll Gardens and reward yourself with a sweet treat while socializing with the rest of the group. We will finish the route by the Caroll Street Subway Station, on the F/G lines.

  • The 5K will begin at Cadman Plaza in downtown Brooklyn, accessible via many major subway lines. Meet in front of the Henry Ward Beecher Statue in Cadman Plaza Park, at the intersection of Johnson Street and Cadman Plaza West.

  • There will be a costume contest for the most creative Spirit Animal.

FAQs

Is the run a race?

No, this is a fun run, and the run will be led at a 10-minute-mile pace, with stops for photos along the route. Streets will not be closed for the event and we will stop for traffic lights. 

Where do we begin and end?

Note this is a point-to-point route and we do not finish at the same place we begin. We begin at Cadman Plaza in downtown Brooklyn. Meet in front of the Henry Ward Beecher Statue in Cadman Plaza Park, at the intersection of Johnson Street and Cadman Plaza West. We will finish the route by the Caroll Street Subway Station, on the F/G lines.

We will end in Historic Carroll Gardens.

How long are the run and walk?

The run and walk are both 5K and include stops for photos and talking about key haunted spots on the route. The run will take about an hour to complete. The walk will take about two hours to complete.

I am a beginner. Can I still join?

Yes! You just have to be able to run or walk 3.1 miles, with a few stops/breaks along the way. 

What is the event hashtag?

Follow and tag @Runstreet Instagram and @Bklyntreks Instagram and use hashtag #HauntedBrooklyn5K in posts to enter the photo contest. 

What are the covid precautions?

All Runstreet staff are fully vaccinated against covid-19. All runners and walkers must wear a mask at the start and endpoint of the run and masks are mandatory in any crowded areas we may pass during the run. The total number of runners and walkers will be limited and we encourage everyone to stay gapped when possible during the tours.

Are kids or dogs allowed?

Yes! Kids under 12 are free and dogs are free. Dogs must be up to date on all vaccinations, have no aggression issues, and be used to walking or running 5K in the city. Kids and teens ages 16 and under must be accompanied by a legal guardian.

I cannot attend. What are my options?

There will be no refunds but you can transfer your ticket to another runner. Email marnie@runstreet.com with the full name and email of the replacement runner or walker. 

What if the weather is bad?

We will walk and run rain or shine. In the event of extreme or dangerous weather such as lightning and thunderstorms, the event will be rescheduled. Everyone will receive an email about the rescheduled date. 

Do I have to dress up?

You get to dress up as you please! Don some ears, whiskers or show some scales if you're feelin it! There will be a fun costume contest with winners announced after the tours. That said, you do not have to dress up if your heart does not desire to do so.
